Am I Not a Man?: The Dred Scott Story — Book Feature

by MahoganyBooksSeptember 23, 2009

An illiterate slave, Dred Scott trusted in an all-white, slave-owning jury

“Ain’t I a Man”

to declare him free. But after briefly experiencing the glory of freedom and
manhood, a new state Supreme Court ordered the cold steel of the shackles to
be closed again around his wrists and ankles. Falling to his knees, Dred
cried, “Ain’t I a man?” [...]

To a Bourgeois Sister, an experiment in Line Endings

by Melanie HendersonSeptember 21, 2009

So I’ve been reading The Art of the Poetic Line by James Logenbach. I appreciate Logenbach’s discussion of the line break vs. line end and do agree that when a line ends, it doesn’t necessarily break; the syntax may continue. Line break implies a definitive end, a stop. But, all lines of [...]

Eden’s Lounge – Organic Tuesdays

by Evelyn N. AlfredAugust 23, 2009

Buzzing off of the excitement of being the “Poet in the City” I did some researching online for Open Mic events and found a variety of potential places to hit up. I wasn’t exactly sure of how to narrow it down, but a friend forwarded me an email from Eden’s Lounge and even though the [...]

Reflections on “This Bridge Called My Back”

by Bettina JuddMay 31, 2009

“Why am I compelled to write? Because the writing saves me from this complacency I fear. Because I have no choice. Because I must keep the spirit of my revolt and myself alive. Because the world I create in the writing compensates for what the real world does not give me. By writing I put [...]

Reveiwing The Willie Lynch Letter and The Making of a Slave

by Derrick YoungMarch 19, 2009

I picked up this book for two very specific reasons:
1. To gain insight into the theory that African slaves were intentionally de-constructed into self-loathing, destructive personalities for the sole purpose of capital gain.
2. It was a very short book that I could read on my dreaded direct flight to San Antonio.

From a technical stand point [...]

Politics, Poetry, and Prose?: On Inaugural Poet, Elizabeth Alexander

by Melanie HendersonJanuary 23, 2009

Alexander’s “say it plain” delivery impelled varied responses.

“She can’t read as well as Maya Angelou.”

“The highlight of the Inauguration!”

“That’s not poetry. That’s prose.”

Alexander, mother, professor, poet, created her space:

All about us is noise. All about us is
noise and bramble, thorn and din, each
one of our ancestors on our tongues.

To have the opportunity to be [...]
